Industrial Paint and Coatings

An industrial coating is a paint or coating defined by its protective, rather than its aesthetic properties, although it can provide both. The most common use of industrial coatings is for corrosion control how as other application like fire resistance can be included. These coating systems may include a primer, an intermediate coat, and a top coat. The polymer film acts as a physical barrier between the surface and the corrosive environment such as atmosphere, water and soil. Different types of coatings are used for protection in different environments. A detailed Engineering Specification would usually indicate this process.

Primer

Primers or undercoat is a preparatory coating put on materials before painting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the base being painted. In practice, primer is often used when painting many kinds of porous materials, such as concrete and wood. Priming is mandatory if the material is not water resistant and will be exposed to the elements.

Intermediate Layer

Intermediate coats are applied to ‘build’ the total film thickness of the system. Generally, the thicker the coating causes the longer the life. Intermediate coats are specially designed to enhance the overall protection and, when highly pigmented, decrease permeability to oxygen and water. The incorporation of laminar pigments, such as micaceous iron oxide (MIO), reduces or delays moisture penetration in humid atmospheres and improves tensile strength.

Top Coat

Top coating is a coat of paint applied over the underlying material as a sealer. In a paint system, the topcoat provides a resinous seal over the intermediate coats and the primer. The first topcoat may in fact penetrate into the intermediate coat, thus providing the coating system with an impervious top surface. The topcoat is the first line of defense of many coatings against aggressive agents.
